1600 Sedans

Regular racers at the track, the 1600's have been competing at the Nowra venue since it opened. It is a relatively cheap form of speedway sedan racing with the emphasis on competitive fun and enjoyment in a friendly atmosphere. The major events for the division each year are the hotly contested 'Dave Green Memorial' and the 'South Coast 1600 Sedan Title'.

Sanctions - The 1600 Sedan division competes at the Nowra Speedway under the direction of the Wollongong City Speedway Club according to the machine specifications as set down by the Speedway Sedan Association of New South Wales.

Specifications - Vehicles must be mass produced type and have a sedan or coupe body style with an engine capacity of no greater than 1.6 litres plus 5%, (1650cc absolute). Front or rear wheel drives are allowed, however no 4 wheel drive or 4 wheel steer vehicles are permitted. Turbo or supercharging is not permitted. Engines use carburetors (any type or configuration). Fuel injection is permitted with stringent controls in place.

View the current 1600 specifications here. Please note the phase out period for Jerry Cans, Fibreglass or plastic seats and Avgas has now passed. These items are no longer permitted.

Safety - As in all speedway sedan divisions a full roll cage of minimum 38mm diameter steel pipe, built to the required specifications must be fitted to protect the driver. Safety is paramount in our sport. Driver protection includes the correct fitting of an approved race seat, five point harness seat belts and a window net. The driver is required to wear a protective race suit including boots, gloves, neckbrace and helmet over fireproof underwear.

Interested in a closer look ? - come down into the pits after the meeting and meet the drivers.
